This course introduces teachers to innovative approaches for teaching beyond traditional classrooms. Participants will explore outdoor, community, school, and digital spaces to design engaging, experiential lessons. Through hands-on activities and real-world examples, teachers will develop strategies to enhance student engagement, wellbeing, and learning outcomes using nature, public spaces, and flexible school environments.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
Plan and deliver lessons in outdoor and non-conventional spaces.
Apply experiential, place-based, and inquiry-based learning methods.
Use community, cultural, and digital spaces to enhance teaching.
Design active, collaborative, and inclusive learning experiences.
Adapt traditional lessons for flexible, innovative learning environments.
The course uses an experiential and practice-oriented approach, where participants engage directly with the environments in which they will teach. Each day combines brief theoretical inputs with activities in outdoor, community, school, and digital spaces, allowing teachers to explore how different environments can enhance learning. Participants will work in parks, plazas, museums, gardens, and flexible school areas, testing lesson ideas and observing how students might interact with these spaces. Reflection and group discussion are integrated throughout, encouraging sharing of insights, adaptation of strategies, and collaborative design of innovative learning experiences. Digital tools are also incorporated to support planning, documentation, and extension of activities beyond the physical environment. This approach ensures participants develop confidence and practical strategies to teach effectively in non-conventional spaces.
Participants will:
Have a portfolio of lesson plans for outdoor, community, and school spaces.
Be able to implement learning activities in diverse non-traditional environments.
Gain confidence in active, experiential, and inclusive teaching methods.
Develop strategies to integrate nature, community, and digital tools into their curriculum.
Leave with practical, ready-to-use approaches to engage students in and outside the classroom.
