DESCRIPTION

When working with children with special needs, teachers can accomplish a great deal by managing the learning environment proactively to prevent behavior problems and promote learning.

This training will help participants to discover how to address the students’ learning needs in positive and effective ways that will help them learn more easily.

Thanks to this, the satisfaction and enthusiasm from their work will turn the problems into challenges and will also improve their relationship with the entire educational community.

  • DAY 1: I am special, and you?

Getting to know each other and sharing experiences.

Introduction of the course content and learning outcomes.

Reality is not a problem. What does “special needs” really mean? Inclusive education.

What we can dream of. Exercise to identify goals, limitations and resources needed.

Group discussion about the modern education system for special needs children. Analysis of the present and improvements for the future.

If I change. The greatest challenges of disabled children’s teachers.

What I want. Scheme of Human Behavior. Rational Emotive Therapy + Behavior modification.

Individualized Education Program (IEP). Code of successful practice, analysis of the most important areas of special needs: cognitive, learning, social, emotional, behavioral, communication, interaction, sensory, physical.

  • DAY 3: Playing with time

Details are everything. How school can support the development of special needs children. Creating a supportive classroom environment.

How? How to work with special needs children. Presentation of successful methods.

Need to belong. How to integrate disabled students with classmates.

Together is easier. Cooperation between parents and teachers. Communication tips.

  • DAY 4: Building bridges, not walls

Identify to change. Disability discrimination.

21 days of empathy. Students, teachers and parents’ attitudes towards the inclusion of children with special educational needs in the ordinary school. Advantages and disadvantages of integration.

The tribe. Support group for special needs children.

Case study. We analyze cases of daily practice in small groups, following a scheme of problem solving that helps clarify and systematize.

  • DAY 5: To do or not to do. That’s the question

Tips. Resistances to change and how to overcome them.

With a map is better. Workshop to create a “good practice” book.

METHODOLOGY

The approach will be practical, experiential and based on an analysis of reality and the concerns of the group. Mainly we will work in assembly and small groups, encouraging the reflection and creativity in order to expand the options and alternatives for action. We will also make use of the role-play, and the analysis of cases and group dynamics.

RESULTS

By completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Become more aware of the teachers’ impact on the intellectual development and life of a special needs student;
  • Effectively support for students´ development process;
  • Improve your communication skills and relationship building process between disabled student and the classmates;
  • Get to know and be able to use a wide range of tools aimed at satisfying special children needs;
  • Know how to help students with their emotional and physical problems;
  • Feel more motivated and enthusiastic about the development of their work day by day;
  • Learn how to analyze problems in order to maximize its positive influence on improvement or solution of the situation.
